The increasing concern about environmental issues and the limitation of natural resources have led society and the corporate environment to have different attitudes that minimize negative environmental impacts. This paper aims to report on the implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) in a red ceramic factory in the city of Sobral, Ceara. The methodology was based on a case study, qualitative and documentary research, observations and interviews. The article explains the importance of the ceramic sector for both local and Brazilian economy, taking special account the impacts caused by its activity. The company has an EMS based on ISO 14001 and has developed environmental actions according to legal requirements since the 1980s. The first practice adopted was the policy of 5R's as a quality program; later they implemented cleaner production (CP) in order to be more efficient and reduce impacts. The company has 1,466 hectares in a management area where all the firewood for production is collected from. Among other environmental actions, the company carries out selective collection, seen as a socio-environmental action due to its partnership with Ecoelce.Downloads
