Basic sanitation is a right guaranteed by Brazilian legislation, but as far as access to drinking water and sanitary exhaustion are concerned, these services need to evolve significantly to be considered efficient, especially in rural areas, where access to drinking water is critical and occurs through alternative sources of supply. This work aims to show the challenge of basic sanitation in rural areas of the municipalities in the Lower Paraíba do Sul and Itabapoana (RH-IX) Hydrographic Region, and the importance of monitoring water quality in these locations, enabling the identification of possible sources of contamination resulting from the lack of sanitation. It is also important to take into consideration the resolution of the different aspects related to water contamination in these areas, through structural and educational measures regarding the importance of environmental quality to ensure the health of the population living in the rural communities of these municipalities.Downloads
