Abstract

The increasingly socio-environmental crisis of the capitalist world-system requires initiatives to at least mitigate socio-environmental problems. The market has presented some instruments such as environmental valuation, with pricing for environmental services, in the direction of an environmental services market. This article initially makes some notes on ecosystem services, environmental services and Payment for Environmental Services. Then, the question of unequal global center-periphery exchanges is discussed, a characteristic theme of world-systems analysis, which is enriched with the environmental dimension, notably involving energy exchanges. Finally, the Carbon Credit Market and unequal exchanges are related, with reflections and criticisms about this market. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate that the Carbon Credit Market, on the one hand, has difficulties to be applied in practice, on a large scale, and on the other hand, if it succeeds, results in the geopolitical problem of unequal global center-periphery exchanges.
