Abstract

The Paraiba do Sul River (RPS) has great economic importance, as the river crosses the most industrialized states of Brazil. The aim of this study was to characterize the dynamics of nutrients and physicochemical parameters of the RPS between 2008 and 2009. The water sampling was conducted fortnightly. The flow was higher in the rainy season, followed by values of SPM, NO2- and PO43- and contrary to the values of conductivity, dissolved oxygen and NO3-. The temperature, pH and alkalinity had little variation. The river flow proved to be the main factor controlling the variation of nutrient content, and the values of physicochemical parameters.
