Considerations on the hydroelectric generation in Rio de Janeiro based on the São Paulo water crisis

This paper discusses the situation of hydroelectric generation in the state of Rio de Janeiro based on the water crisis in the state of São Paulo. It presents an exploratory survey of data on Rio de Janeiro’s energy matrix to verify its characteristics. The survey also demonstrates an analysis of the monitoring report of reservoirs of the hydraulic system of the Paraíba do Sul River, and the daily monitoring of the hydropower operation of the National Interconnected System (SIN). The work shows that there is a direct dependence between the volume of water stored in the three major hydroelectric power plants (UHE) in the state of Rio de Janeiro and the flow of the Paraiba do Sul River and its tributaries in the State of São Paulo. Therefore, any natural or anthropic action that may drastically reduce the flow of this river will negatively impact the water storage for the hydroelectric power plants installed in the Paraíba do Sul River.Downloads
