Material cultural heritage in the face of climate changes: an analysis of scientific production from 2014 to 2024

Abstract

Extreme climate events such as floods and droughts cause damage and losses to heritage assets, directly impacting the identity and memory of communities. Given this scenario, the research seeks to identify and analyze studies on the impacts of climate change on built heritage in Brazil and worldwide, in addition to ongoing adaptation actions. A structured search was conducted in the Scielo, Web of Science and Scopus databases, which resulted in the selection of 14 articles published between 2014 and 2024. The research reveals a scarcity of studies on the subject in Latin America, especially in Brazil. The studies analyzed demonstrate the variety of impacts of climate change on built heritage, including physical damage to the structure of assets, deterioration of materials and loss of cultural value. Regarding adaptation strategies, the studies show that there are basically three paths to be followed, considering the level of exposure and vulnerability: a) maintenance of the building in place, with interventions that promote its adaptation and protection; b) relocation of the most exposed buildings; and c) recording and documenting structures that will inevitably be lost.
