Hydrological Analysis of Droughts in the Municipality of Paraíba do Sul, Rio de Janeiro

The analysis of droughts at different spatial scales is essential to support mitigation actions in response to water scarcity. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the intensity and duration of droughts in the municipality of Paraíba do Sul (RJ), using the Streamflow Drought Index (SDI) at temporal scales of 3, 6, and 12 months. Daily streamflow data from the local gauging station (Code 58380001), with a 49-year historical record (1973–2021), obtained from the Brazilian National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA), were used. After calculating the SDI, the Mann–Kendall test was applied to identify temporal trends. The results indicated a negative trend at all analyzed temporal scales, suggesting a higher occurrence of droughts in the future. In addition, an increase in extreme and severe events was observed in recent years, reinforcing the scenario of intensified water scarcity and highlighting the need for management and adaptation strategies.Downloads
