Systematic review of microplastic transport flow from land to ocean

Abstract

The consumption profile and the final destination of products that contain plastic clearly demonstrate consumption patterns of a globalized economy based on the growth of production as an economic foundation. Throughout history, world culture has not added to plastics life cycle methodologies and circular production that is focus on reuse, recycling and ways of disposing of this material. It is essential for society to create systems to manage the production, consumption and final destination cycle of plastics. The estimative of productive growth does not align with the significant growth in recycling, a factor that contributes to disposal and consequently increases the amount of waste that will be released into the oceans. In this way, it is important to know the amount of plastic that enter rivers and are transported to the sea, how transport happens on the globe and how the degradation processes are and what impacts are caused to nature. Literature review is a fundamental step for research and formation of scientific knowledge. Through the systematic review, it is possible to explain, plan, justify and update relevant issues of the research focus. This work presents a methodology for searching for scientific articles and promotes the bibliographic contribution on the topic of microplastic transport from the continent to the ocean.
