Sustainability indicators applied to water resources management: a systematic review

Abstract

Abstract: Several methods emerge each year with the objective of measuring which are the most appropriate measures to promote sustainable development policies. As a result, it is necessary to have consistent information on the progress of countries, states and municipalities towards sustainable development, in order to guide the establishment of coherent public policies, in search of economic growth allied to sustainable policies. Indicators are one of the tools available in project planning and management that assist in the decision-making process and monitoring these decisions on the way to sustainable use and management of water and natural resources. The objective of this study was to map and gather information regarding the use of the sustainability indicators applied to the management of water resources. Twenty-three studies were analyzed that addressed different methodologies using the use of environmental and sustainability indicators in the analysis of water resources management policies and actions, detailing the “prosperity assessment” system, due to its holistic and integrative character and its adherence to the UN 2030 Agenda.
