Meanings for “housing” and "neighborhood": a case study of a community facing the possibility of removal

In this article, we discuss removal policies and urban resettlement using a qualitative field research in a risk area with a population selected to be resettled elsewhere. We first contextualize public housing policies according to national guidelines, and their application in the researched municipality. Following, we present an investigation with residents threatened with removal, regarding the meanings they attribute to house, neighborhood, and neighborhood relations. From the analysis of statements obtained in the field research, we discuss what the experiences and meanings produced by these social subjects may indicate about removal policies and urban resettlement.Downloads
