Abstract

Municipal solid waste management is an instrument that aims to comprehensively manage the stages of generation, collection and disposal of waste, covering all issues related to this process, which engages social, technical, political, administrative aspects, among others. Problems related to waste are diverse, and the impact of the lack of management affects not only the environment, but also society and economy. This paper approaches the current situation of municipal solid waste in the municipalities within the influence area of the Açu Port Complex – São João da Barra, Campos dos Goytacazes, São Francisco de Itabapoana and Quissamã –, points out the key requirements to achieve an integrated management of waste, based on the precepts of the Brazilian National Solid Waste Policy, and makes an assessment of waste management in the four municipalities, proposing improvements and adjustments in their management systems.
