Abstract

The Brazilian process of urbanization has resulted in the occupation of environmentally fragile areas, especially for low-income populations, who try to solve their housing problems. This study aimed to do a review of the literature on urban drainage and development of cities, as well as a case study in the town of Três Vendas, municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes/RJ. In a region of precarious infrastructure and transport planning, the local population suffers with imminent flood risk and lacks urban intervention to provide better housing for the community. We sought to understand the natural phenomena that influence flooding of the Muriaé River, and how human interference can also be harmful. Opinion of the residents were obtained through interviews. In addition to this participatory research, the study conducted bibliographic searches and field surveys.
