Abstract

The mangrove of Gargaú (São Francisco do Itabapoana/RJ) has a significant importance for the local community since its income comes mainly from collecting crabs, clams and fish. The aim of this paper is to study environmental health indexes and indicators in order to adapt them to the specific characteristics of this estuarine ecosystem. The study is based on semi-empirical research with application of semi-structured questionnaires. Five indexes were evaluated, and the Environmental Health / Criciúma indicator was considered the most suitable for diagnosing problems related to environmental sanitation and for planning future investments focused on the local community.
