Abstract

This article is the result of research carried out during the preparation of a monograph for the Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, whose objective was to investigate the contribution of the methodology Troubleshooting for introduction of algebraic notation. For preparation of the research instruments and data analysis, the conception of production of meaning for algebra education was used. The problem to be investigated was the determination of a generic configuration to form a magic square with three horizontal lines and three vertical rows, using algebraic notation. Data collection occurred from the trial of a didactic proposal, embodied in a script, in order to guide the student in the construction of algebraic notation for the configuration of a magic square 3x3. Data analysis indicated that this methodology can provide legitimacy and appropriateness of algebraic notation, allowing the construction of meaning to it, by the students.
