Abstract

The coastline between Itabapoana and Paraíba do Sul river mouths stands out due to the transition between tertiary deposits of the Barreiras formation and the quaternary fluvial and marine plain. Active and inactive cliffs evidence the process of retrogradation, while beach crests evidence the progradation of the coastline. This paper aims to detail the characteristics of coastal geomorphology, highlighting geology, geomorphology and evolutionary processes. The methodology consisted in the mapping of geological information, geomorphological, beach profiles, collection and granulometric analysis representative of the dune-beach-shoreface system. Results show that concave and convex beach profiles, respectively, indicate areas in erosion (to the north) and areas in accumulation (to the south). The granulometric analysis indicates the presence of very fine sand, fine sand and medium sand evidencing areas with lower and higher wave energy in addition to the regional characteristic of high sediment transport.
