Abstract

The increased use of plastic has caused the accumulation of microplastic particles in the environment, especially in the oceans. This is mainly due to the incorrect disposal of these plastic wastes. In Brazil, as this theme is considered new and the number of published studies is still scarce, there is a great opportunity to study about microplastics. Thus, in this article, a literature review was conducted on the subject of microplastics and environmental impacts, focusing on analyzing occurrences in the marine environment. To this end, we studied waste sources that generate microplastics, procedures for collecting microplastics, materials used to collect and analyze them in the laboratory, and effects of microplastics on the environment and health of living things.
