Abstract

This study is intended to present a panorama of the townships surrounding the Port of Açu Industrial Complex (CLIPA), São João da Barra, Rio de Janeiro State – Brazil,on the basis of territorial and environmental issues. The overall objective is to analyze the relationship of the populations neighboring the complex with the territory they occupy, since both localities and the complex occupy a region that was rural for years. The methodology used was survey data on EIA-environmental impact assessment of Industrial District, field research with several visits to rural locations closer to the enterprise to identify their characteristics and their local relevance, interviews with residents and representatives of associations, participation in public hearings on the new Urban Plan of São João da Barra. As a result for this study, we have the characterization of the urban centers surrounding the CLIPA, the identification of areas with greater environmental fragility, the environmental damage already caused by the installation of the complex, and its reflection on the neighboring town.
