Abstract

The use of indexes has been stimulated by the National Water Agency (NWA),because their use helps to standardize the collection and analysis of water. Moreover, they facilitate the reading of quality conditions for all audiences, including non-technical individuals (ANA, 2009). The objective of this work was to assess water quality in the river São João by using the Water Quality Index (WQI), to answer questions relating to pollution from domestic sewage. For calculation purposes, the following parameters were analyzed: temperature, turbidity, total solid residue, pH, dissolved oxygen, BOD, total phosphorus, total nitrogen and Escherichia coli. The results indicate that the water quality in the river can be considered good in most points of collection, having as critical parameters solid waste and Escherichia coli. The study showed how human activities are influencing the basin. Thus, we concluded that the use of the referred index is relevant for the monitoring of water quality in the observed area, considering that it was not possible to obtain any literature about the region that uses indexes to evaluate the water quality in that river.
