Computer simulations as strategic tools in urban energy planning: A pedagogical approach in undergraduate education

This article discusses the pedagogical experience acquired in a 30-hour undergraduate module focused on simulations allied with urban energy planning. Areas of two Brazilian cities were studied using City Energy Analyst, a tool developed by ETH Zürich that addresses energy and urban aspects simultaneously. For the simulations, one of the program's original databases designed for hot countries, called SG, and the newly created Brazilian database (BR), a product of a Master’s dissertation, were used. The students were introduced to Urban Energy Planning and simulations, with a practical application of BR. The module presented a theoretical-practical approach as its methodology. Test simulations with CEA and the explanation of relevant concepts were done. Simulations on energy demand and potential energy sources were conducted, with results presented to an ETH Zürich researcher. It is concluded that the module achieved its educational goals, assessing the potential of BR and CEA in Brazil.Downloads
