Payment for Environmental Services as an economic instrument for water management: the case of the sub-basin of Cambucaes stream, São João River Basin, Silva Jardim/RJ

This work aimed to propose the payment for environmental services as management instrument of the São João River Basin, starting with the sub-basin of Cambucaes stream, by assigning an economic value for the water body based on environmental valuation methods. The study area was justified by their relevance. The basin studied has several uses, as public and industry supply, mining and recreation, but it has suffered with degradation by deforestation, land speculation, overexploitation of some natural resources and conventional agricultural practices, among others. Public supply stands out and is linked to Juturnaíba Dam, which is responsible for the supply of eight municipalities in the Lakes Region of the state of Rio de Janeiro and is further considered to provide water for other regions of the state. The prioritized sub-basin is located on Juturnaíba Dam’s upstream and is very close to São João River, constituting an important recharge and discharge area of the river basin, and is likewise suffering with environmental degradation and needing urgent intervention.Downloads
