Elections, corruption and local instability: the case of Bom Jesus do Itabapoana, RJ

Throughout the year of 2008, the city of Bom Jesus do Itabapoana, located in the State of Rio de Janeiro, was the scene of a serious political-institutional crisis in the Executive, having had eight mayors in one electoral term – a fact that had nationwide repercussion. Based on the classic theoretical debate about democratization, political participation, and local government, I began fieldwork in 2009, aiming at identifying which factors contributed to this unprecedented political crisis in the history of the city.
