Use of groundwater wells in Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ: solution or problem?

Groundwater wells. Waterborne diseases. Paraiba do Sul River.Abstract
In March 2003, the chemically contaminated mud leakage from the tailings pond of a pulp industry in Cataguases-MG caused the contamination of the Pomba River, with serious environmental damages to the region, including municipalities located in the regions of Zona da Mata Mineira, Noroeste and Norte Fluminense. The accident caused the interruption of the water supply in seven cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ, the event intensified the use of well water from groundwater to replace regular water supply services provided by the water and sewage companies. The wells drilled at the time remained active even after the supply became regular again. Currently, new wells continue to be drilled in both urban and countryside areas. This water is consumed, in most cases, without prior assessment of its drinkability. As these wells are extremely susceptible to contamination from diffuse sources of pollution, such as septic tanks, gas stations, cracks in sewers, deposits of organic waste from nearby landfills among others, the possibility of higher incidence of waterborne diseases among consumers is increased.Downloads
