Creosote, an organic pollutant derivative from hard coal, was widely used to prevent deterioration of wooden sleepers, causing edaphic contamination in the União Biological Reserve. Risks to the population health and environmental balance, with potential to affect crucial areas for human consumption and ecosystem functions, justify this research. This review aims to describe creosote toxicity characteristics, the analytical methods used for its characterization and the remediation methods to use on contaminated areas by this pollutant. The methodology used was a descriptive approach based on documental research.Downloads
