Applying gas furnace ash in civil construction

The present work shows a study on the potential use of gas furnace ash. In Brazil, the volume of that industrial residue has been increasing significantly in the last decade. The implementation of government facilities for generating electric power, mainly on the use of natural gas reserves sources, is considered as responsible for that increasing volume. An experimental program was developed by adding gas furnace ash to Portland cement mixtures and applying that as filler in asphalt mixtures. Portland cement mortars behavior was assessed by absorption, splitting and compression tests. Indirect traction, resilience modulus, Marshall and ultrasonic pulse velocity tests were carried out on asphalt mixtures. Statistical analysis applied to the test results shows that gas furnace ash presents a significant potential to be used in Portland cement and asphalt mixtures.Downloads
