Improper land use is responsible for environmental degradation due to declining fertility, loss of biodiversity, erosion and compaction. In rural settlements, it is commonly observed that prior land use contributes for the degradation of soils ,including areas of permanent preservation. This study aims to identify the degraded areas in the Santo Amaro settlement, in a district in Campos dos Goytacazes, to analyze the degree of deterioration of soils, and its possible causes. Field observations showed seriously degraded areas because of erosion in the form of gullies and ridges as forests fragments in natural regeneration. Furthermore, the study found absence of forest fragments in natural regeneration within permanent preservation areas (APP), coverage on top of the hills and slopes, as well as removal of riparian vegetation.Downloads
