Tensions and contradictions in the traffic circle monument: critical analysis of the regional centrality of Itaperuna, RJ

The article proposes an analysis of the centrality of the municipality of Itaperuna in the Northwest Region of Rio de Janeiro State, taking as a reference point the monument installed at the roundabout leading into the city, called Praça dos Poderes. The text highlights tensions and contradictions both in the representation of centrality expressed in the monument and in its discursive foundation, anchored in memorialists from the region. The notion of centrality, which has accompanied Itaperuna's trajectory for over a century, refers to the process of formation and consolidation of the municipality at the end of the 19th century. At the same time, it is related to the contemporaneity of the monument at the roundabout, through the analysis of updated economic, demographic, and urban indicators.Downloads
