Design, fashion, and the reinvention of old clothes at Poppi's Thrift Store

Design plays an essential part in the establishment of consumer culture as a modern way of life. It is present in distribution and use stages. It encompasses spaces, products and experiences that promote the constant acquisition of new things. It plans the lifespan of products, through technical and symbolic specifications, as it is associated with fashion and trends. However, the unsustainability of this way of life causes changes in the field of design itself. This research investigates how design can contribute to the establishment of longer-lasting relationships with things with respect to sustainability. This qualitative, applied and explanatory study adopts bibliographic, documentary and field research. As a case, it analyzes the actions of designer Bianca Poppi, especially on social media: how she reinvents the making of fashion, from the production of garments to the promotion of an alternative way of life to excessive consumerism and disposal.Downloads
