A flight over the Purple Land: an analysis of Eduardo Galeano's memoirs of exile

Understanding exile as an experience that provokes transformations in the identity of the exiled, this article aims to analyze Eduardo Galeano's memoirs of exile. To this end, we chose to focus our study on his book Días y Noches de Amor y de Guerra, published in 1978 in Spain. Our analysis is based on theorists who address the theme of memory, such as Seligmann-Silva and Aleida Assmann, and research on the phenomenon of exile, including the one conducted by Denise Rollemberg, Pablo Yankelevich, and Luis Roniger. We will thus address the Uruguayan author's view of the dictatorships that occurred in Latin America between the 1960s and 1980s, and we will present exile as a complex experience, marked by the difficulty of being forced away from one's land and family and simultaneously seen as a possibility for discovery and broadening one's horizons. We will therefore use the concept of metamorphosis, theorized by Rollemberg, to describe this period, so representative of Galeano's work.Downloads
