Public squares as urban green spaces: an analysis of spatial distribution throughout the urban fabric of Campos dos Goytacazes, Brazil

Given the contemporary environmental crisis, urban green spaces take on crucial ecological, social, and landscape functions. This study investigates the presence and spatial distribution of public green spaces in Campos dos Goytacazes (Brazil), focusing on public squares. The methodology comprised a literature review, document analysis, consultations with public agencies, and field surveys, resulting in a thematic map generated via QGis software. The findings indicate that the quality of these areas — assessed by infrastructure, maintenance, accessibility, soil permeability, and afforestation — varies drastically according to the socio-economic profile and land value. A concentration of well-equipped structures was observed in higher-income neighborhoods, highlighting deep socio-spatial and environmental inequalities within the urban fabric. Although some positive aspects were identified, most of the analyzed areas show significant deficiencies. The study concludes that there is an urgent need for public policies focused on the requalification and implementation of open spaces to promote a more inclusive, sustainable, and equitable urban environment.Downloads
