Abstract

This research was aimed at assessing the environmental water management in thermoelectric plants and, in particular, to carry out a case study of the Mário Lago Power Plant, located in the city of Macaé, RJ. This dissertation discusses environmental disasters, the Brazilian environmental legislation, requirements for the management of water resources, trends in national and international standards, water balance and systems implemented at the Mário Lago Power Plant for monitoring the water quality of effluents, its applicability in other Brazilian or international thermoelectric plants and industries. Effluent and river water environmental monitoring data from the Mário Lago Power Plant between the years 2002 and 2008 were evaluated as well as the environmental management system focusing on effluent monitoring and river water quality. Essential tools to promote continuous improvement are also discussed in the study.
