With the expected growth of mariculture activites in productive regions, the hygienic-sanitary control of those bodies is necessary in order to ensure product quality in the market. Among the contaminants of these animals, the phycotoxins - toxins produced by microalgae stand out. This study presents aspects of the cultivation of bivalve molluscs, the major syndromes caused by phycotoxins accumulated in bivalve molluscs, studies on harmful algae monitoring conducted in other countries, and the Brazilian legislation relevant to the subject. We emphasize some difficulties in implementing the harmful algae monitoring program in Arraial do Cabo/RJ. Future aquaculture activities in the region will need this information, as well as coordinated actions between the government and fish farmers, so that they can act to control the quality of production of bivalve molluscs.Downloads
