Abstract

Constituting the beginning of the formation of drainage networks, river sources are essential for maintenance of water resources. Despite the indisputable importance of preserving these areas, such environments are still suffering from human predatory actions. As a result, there is a reduction of the riparian vegetation, loss of flora and fauna biodiversity, increased soil erosion and silting of the various water bodies including springs. This study presents a literature review of the environmental situation of the Itabapoana River Basin, with emphasis on the river springs areas.
