Abstract

The paper discusses the importance of assessment in social policies, especially in basic education. The work is divided into three parts: the first deals with the Brazilian educational policy, its organization and legislation; the second is about the importance of evaluating social policies; and the third is an analysis of IDEB (Basic Education Development Index) - the main form of assessment of basic education. Thus, we intend to discuss and reflect on the role of assessment policies, and whether IDEB has been effective in the pursuit of improving the quality of basic education.
