The article analyzes the historical process initiated with Independence and the formation, consolidation, and disintegration of the Brazilian Empire based on the Gramscian category of passive revolution. It argues that the constitution of the imperial state can be interpreted as a particular form of passive revolution, marked by the combination of political modernization and restoration of colonial society, particularly slavery. To this end, it mobilizes a reading of the Italian Risorgimento, highlighting its main groupings and the dynamics of passive revolution, aiming to establish connections for the analysis of the Brazilian case. It argues that Independence inaugurated a process of long passive revolution, subsequently consolidated under conservative hegemony and progressively disaggregated throughout the crisis of the Empire. Finally, the article identifies analogies and differences between the Brazilian and Italian cases, aiming to contribute to the nationalization of the category of passive revolution.Downloads
