This dissertation emphasizes the relevance of implementing a project to use energy from wastes due the serious impacts caused by their current disposal. It presents the major energy sources and important changes in the Brazilian energy matrix for the use of less polluting energy sources which are also able to significantly reduce emission of poisonous gases, mainly wastes disposed of in open-air landfills. This study aims at presenting the situation of municipal solid waste in Brazil and at proposing an alternative to minimize its negative impacts, focusing on local conditions in Macaé in the year 2008 – a major oil producing city with no appropriate waste disposal site. Through research on available technologies for waste energy conversion, DRANCO technology was chosen for evaluation of economic viability, and of social and environmental aspects within the carbon credit and royalty collection programs.Downloads
