Abstract

This study aims at contributing to the history of the Escola de Aprendizes e Artífices de Campos by using photography and complementary sources, such as oral reports and the periodic press. With this in mind, we propose the historic and semiotic analyses of images. This school, like others, was unable to keep low income students attending its vocacional courses. The photographs not only registered a school with pupils in a precarious economic situtation, but also disclosed the inability of the educational instituition which presented indexes below the national average despite, the relative political, geographical, and economical privileges the city enjoyed then.
