Abstract

In 1855, a political movement erupted in the city of Campos in order to create a new province in the Brazilian Empire. The new city would be named Province of Campos dos Goytacazes, based in the city of the same name. Its territory would cover the current north-northwestern areas of Rio de Janeiro State, some cities in the Zona da Mata, and southern Espírito Santo. The project started within the sugarcane economy, which was then living a moment of glory. The southern region of Espírito Santo joined the movement, but it was aborted in both the Court House and Senate. However, the myth of the region and Campos as the capital of the province and, later, of the State of Rio de Janeiro lasted until the early 21st century.
