Abstract

Based on the Appraisal System, this paper analyzes the text "Why does the world hate Pope Benedict XVI?", attributed to Abbot Cacqueray. It specifically focuses on judgment as one possible way to achieve the producer’s attitudinal positioning. Thus, the work is concerned with language stances that criticize or praise, that condemn or applaud a certain behaviour - actions, deeds, sayings, beliefs, motivations – as seen in the text used in the analysis.
