Abstract

The article discusses research in training and professional practice. At first, it presents an historical overview on research and knowledge production in social work, with the aim of identifying the ethical-political and theoretical-methodological "changes" experienced in this field of study. The paper also discusses the relationship between research and the current professional practice of social work, with focus on the health area. Finally, it indicates the need for research in social work to break academic tradition, and even its unidisciplinary character as, reality investigated in the health area, includes the dynamics of life.
