Abstract

Springs are important sources of water for the survival activities of families living in rural areas. But, over the years, man has accelerated the process of environmental degradation, with inappropriate practices that are visible and hinder the conservation of these sources. These practices have contributed, for example, to increase sedimentation of water bodies, decrease the amount of water and worsen its quality. In rural properties, the use of water from springs is common, as it is easier to collect and at a lower cost, and a significant number of these people consume it without any type of treatment, putting their health at risk. The present bibliographic review pointed out that several studies on springs are directly related to their degradation due to population growth, urbanization, agricultural expansion and other environmental impacts. To date, there is a strong indication that a large number of springs are at odds with the legislation of the Forest Code law 12.826, thus indicating the need for preservation actions, which are carried out continuously through interaction with the local population.
